brush away the cobwebs

i suck at time management. i guess this blog is the shining proof that i don't know how to stick in activities which are labeled under "not a matter-of-life-and-death important but matters anyway" into my daily routine.

roll out the red carpet. toot the trumpets. someone's back and it ain't dougie mcarthur.

traipsing into the village

m knight shyamalan serves us with another one of his weird films wrapped in the guise of horror creature feature he entitles, "the village".

basically, it's about a creepily intimate village planted right smack in the middle of a bushy monster-packed forest. right, i just described hogwarts but other than that, things here take on a different road as they were paved by the cameo-hungry indian director.

this village is said to have made a pact to the creatures termed hogwarts-ingly "those we don't speak of" residing inside the forest that no villager is to venture boldly into the woods. in return, the seemingly literate creatures won't cross their borders to have a flesh feast on the villagers. sound fair enough, if you ask me.

for some strange reason, the color of red is forbidden from the village because the "those we don't speak of" (irony: they were a common subject of the people) are attracted to this color---how imeldiffic of them! and guess what the safe color is? did i hear anyone say "fuchsia"? well, the "those we don't speak of" are not that gay so "yellow" is the more apt answer. aside from these rules on color (you ask, does shyamalan watch "queer eye"?), a bell dangling down from the watch tower is the one alarms the people in case of the rare event that the creatures take a little visit to their nook.

this films boasts of an amazing cast that includes joaquin phoenix (a shymalan after he discarded balding bruce willis), sigourney weaver, adrien brody and the revelation, bryce dallas howard, among others.

phoenix plays the son of alice hunt (weaver), lucius, the village's most eligible bachelor who's thrifty with words. a blind tomboy, ivy walker, that lucius had been secretly gunning for since they were children is taken on by wonderful actress howard. the funny thing is, you won't know she's rid of vision until phoenix delivers the discrete line: "you're blind and can't do that!". heck, that girl can give daredevil a run for his money! the third wheel of the lovebirds is handed to halle berry-kissing brody who is noah percy in this film. like lucius, he also has the hots for braille girl---something which gives you the idea on how compact the population is.

plot trudges along and like any soap hogging primetime television, lucius and ivy end up a couple after the girl eggs him to admit his feelings and accept marriage at the same time. now that's my cosmo girl that even carrie bradshaw will pay homage to!

voila, with that one conversation the two are engaged. word spread around faster than jessica simpson could utter "dimwit" and wacko noah confronts lucius. ivy's fiance is nearly killed and the village has no means of supplying him the medicine needed to save him. all possible solutions are exhausted except the one that taps on breaking the pact---forraying into the woods to get medical provisions from the other towns. unmindful of the danger and mindset on being the salvation of his loving half, she forces the permission out of her father to traverse the forest. somewhere along the dilemma, she learns of the secrets that define their very existence.

after watching the movie, some moviegoers expressed the frustration for they came in expecting a horror gore-fest but what they saw was nowhere near that. more than anything, "the village" is a powerful drama. it tackles about humanity---how people's beliefs and principles fuel how they go about their existence. it displays a tinge of politics when it dips on the influence of fear and how it can be used to shackle people. this shyamalan creation shows us the extent of what people can do when hope is no longer in their hearts.

i would also like to point out the marvelous cinematography of this one. we have roger deakins to thanks for that. to those people who want to be fed with visual candy, you won't be disappointed with this one.

"the village" is no "sixth sense". if you go see the movie expecting that the twist is larger than the movie itself, you will need a few mugs of understanding. take this movie for what it is and don't raise the bar too high. i did and guess what---i loved this movie.
